Troop 44 is a youth-led troop. Scouts don’t just participate in the program — they plan it, run it, and lead it. From running troop meetings to planning camping trips to leading their patrol, every Scout develops real leadership skills that carry far beyond Scouting.
Leadership Training Pathway
ILST — Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops
Conducted within the troop by current youth leaders and adult advisors. ILST teaches newly elected Scouts about their leadership role — what it means, what’s expected, and how to be effective.
Best for: Scouts who just received a troop leadership position (SPL, Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, Scribe, etc.)
Prerequisite for: NYLT and NAYLE
NYLT — National Youth Leadership Training
A six-day, council-level course run entirely by trained youth staff. Scouts learn communication, conflict resolution, team development, goal-setting, and the EDGE teaching method. One of the most impactful experiences in a Scout’s career.
Requirements: First Class rank, age 13+, completed ILST
Best for: Scouts ready to step up as senior troop leaders or serve on NYLT staff
NAYLE — National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience
The pinnacle of youth leadership training, held at a BSA national high-adventure base (Philmont or The Summit). Scouts apply NYLT skills in a challenging backcountry environment, building servant leadership skills for life.
Requirements: Completed NYLT, age 14–19, current unit leadership position
Best for: Scouts who want to go further — and future NYLT staff members
Youth Leadership Positions
Troop 44 holds elections twice a year (December and May). Scouts serve six-month terms in these positions:

Order of the Arrow
The Order of the Arrow is Scouting America’s national honor society, recognizing Scouts who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law. Members are elected by their peers — one of the highest honors a Scout can receive from fellow Scouts. Troop 44 holds OA elections each spring.
