Scouting advancement is a journey, not a race. Troop 44 supports every Scout in progressing at their own pace, with structured guidance for first-year Scouts and clear expectations for every rank along the way. Our goal is for every Scout to reach First Class within their first year and continue advancing toward Eagle.
The 7 Ranks of Scouts BSA
🆥 Scout
The first rank, earned shortly after joining. Scouts learn the Scout Oath and Law, the patrol method, and how the troop operates.
🆥 Tenderfoot
Focuses on outdoor skills, first aid basics, and Scout spirit. Earned through active participation in troop activities and campouts.
🆥 Second Class
Builds on Tenderfoot with more advanced camping, cooking, navigation, and first aid skills. Requires participation in troop outings.
🆥 First Class
The milestone rank for first-year Scouts. A Scout who reaches First Class has the core outdoor and leadership skills to be a full contributing member of the troop.
⭐ Star
Requires 4 merit badges (2+ Eagle-required), 4 months in a leadership position, and 6 hours of community service.
⭐ Life
Requires 7 merit badges (3+ Eagle-required), 6 months in a leadership position, and 6 hours of community service.
🧊 Eagle Scout
The highest rank in Scouting. Requires 21 merit badges (14 Eagle-required), 6 months in a leadership position, an Eagle Scout service project, and a board of review. Only about 6% of all Scouts earn Eagle.
Roadmap to First Class
New Scouts follow a structured first-year program to reach First Class rank, including:
- Attending weekly troop meetings
- Participating in monthly camping trips
- Completing rank requirements with mentorship from older Scouts and adult leaders
- Passing skills tests in camping, cooking, navigation, and first aid
Troop 44's experienced older Scouts serve as mentors, helping first-year Scouts learn skills in a supportive, patrol-based environment.
Tracking Advancement
All advancement is tracked in Scoutbook. Scouts and parents can log in at any time to view progress, sign off on requirements, and track merit badge status.
