- Scouts transferring from Packs after earning their AOL (Arrow of Light) Rank
- Existing BSA Scouts transferring from another unit.

Â
As the name implies, a new-Scout patrol serves Scouts who have just joined the troop. Older Scouts called Troop Guides provide leadership for the Patrol, as well as an Assistant Patrol Leader, elected from the new Scouts by the new Scouts. The Troop Guide works with the Scouts to help them get acclimated to Scouting and to reach the rank of First Class. Backing up the troop guide is an Assistant Scoutmaster whose main responsibility is to work with new Scouts.
Â
Scouts typically remain in a new-Scout patrol until they reach First Class rank at which point they will be promoted into a Troop Patrol.
Â
The benefit of the New-Scout Patrol…
- Leadership is provided by trained older Scouts that change on a regular basis. This allows new Scouts to learn from multiple different older Scouts.
- This patrol will focus on Scout skill and progressing towards the rank of First Class.
- Incoming Scouts benefit from working with other Scouts that have recently transitioned into Scouts BSA.
- Scouts are in a patrol with other Scouts close to their age.
- Troop Guides and Assistant Scout Master can monitor the patrol.

The Troop is made up of multiple Troop Patrols. The Patrols are sized between 8-10 active Scouts. This allow for the healthy function of a patrol as well as providing adequate leadership opportunities within the patrol.
Â
Troop patrols typically serve Scouts who have reached First Class rank.
Â
Each patrol will an Assistant Scoutmaster (patrol advisor). The patrol advisor advises and supports the patrol leader but does not take over their responsibilities in any way.
Â
The benefits of the Troop patrol…
- Scouts are motivated to earn First Class rank to be able to move up to a Troop patrol.
- Troop patrols have a wider age and skill range of Scouts allowing, Scouts to benefit from other experiences and capabilities.
- These patrols will focus on providing leadership, honing Scout skills, and working towards the rank of Eagle.
- The patrols are able to maintain a healthy patrol size even though Scouts age out, since there will always be new Scouts getting promoted into patrols.
